  • Teams that need a budget justification by federal object class category

How the documents work together

  1. The budget workbook uses SF-424A categories, marks the modified total direct cost base and drafts the justification.
  2. The Project Narrative template follows common notice of funding opportunity components, with a crosswalk to the review criteria.
  3. The calendar, logic model and report templates cover deadlines, performance measures and reporting.

Is this the right kit?

New to grants? A foundation application is usually a lighter first step: see the Private Foundation or Community Foundation Grant Kit.

Questions about this kit

Do we have to pay to register on SAM.gov?

No. SAM.gov registration is free. The guide explains the registration and renewal, and warns against third parties that charge fees.

Which forms do we need?

Each notice of funding opportunity lists its required forms, usually the SF-424 family and others. The guide and checklist help you read the notice and prepare each one.

Which indirect cost rate can we use?

Your negotiated rate if you have one, or, if you have none, the de minimis rate of up to 15% of modified total direct costs under 2 CFR 200.414(f), unless the notice sets other limits.
